HUH?
WHAT KIND OF SONGS DO YOU SING?
Every song is taught call and response, by ear. Most of the songs we sing come out of a modern cultural revival of singing for the sake of singing. Layer songs with multiple interweaving parts, perhaps inspired by different lines of a poem. Simple chants with opportunities for rich harmony. Engaging rhythmic rounds. Laurence Cole and Annie Zylstra are two fantastic examples of folks writing these kind of songs. In addition to these fresh new songs we sing a few old classic community songs (folk, gospel, spirituals) and songs from other cultures.
WHAT IF I'VE NEVER SUNG WITH OTHER PEOPLE?
Bold shower singers to timid car hum-a-longers, experienced musicians to people scared of singing, you're welcome with us! We've been taught that singing together actually helps us learn songs. We help each other to find our individual parts and then co-create a partner-ship to go places we cannot go alone. Together we flex the muscle of balancing listening and singing to create a rich tapestry of meaningful sound.
DO YOU HAVE REHEARSALS?
We are a drop-in community singing group. We have a growing body of songs that we all know. Every week we learn a few new songs and rotate some songs out seasonally. Anyone can attend any of our groups at any time. The joy of it is we're singing for and with each other, exercising our birthright to make beautiful sound together without expectations of performance or perfection.
